First things first

What does Medical Family Therapist mean?

She is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who is trained to work in medical settings and with medical conditions. That means she sits alongside physicians, nurses, and care teams, and works with what illness does to a person and to the people around them.

What she talks about

Topics

Pick one, mix two, or bring your own question. She will follow where your audience wants to go.

Connection as a vital sign

We measure blood pressure and heart rate. Relationships shape health just as much, and almost nobody checks. What it would take to start.

Bringing AI into a care setting

Every technology decision is a relationship decision. How clinics and health teams can add tools without losing the person in front of them.

Social support is medicine

The line a client said years ago that became the reason Upside exists, and the research that backs it up.

Full bio

Florence Lewis, PhD, LMFT is a Medical Family Therapist, which means she is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who is trained to work in medical settings and with medical conditions, alongside physicians, nurses, and care teams. She has spent nearly fifteen years where mental and physical health meet. Again and again she saw the same thing: patients carrying real pain got better when someone was in their corner. A marriage, a friendship, a sibling, a chosen family. The shape mattered less than the presence. One client put it simply: social support is medicine. That line became Upside Health Research Network, the tax-exempt 501(c)(3) research institute she founded and leads, based in the United States and serving healthcare systems around the world. Through Humanly AI she works with healthcare organizations on a single idea: every technology decision is a relationship decision.
